There are an increasing number of options for getting a high quality sound in a floor standing speaking for under $1,000. While there are of course some low quality models out there to stay away from, there are plenty of options for people who want to build a great home theater without breaking the bank.

Why pick a floor standing speaker

You have the option of a number of speaker models for your home theater system: Floor standing speakers, Bookshelf Speakers, in-wall speakers, and soundbars. While each type is best for a different situation here are a few reasons you may want to go with a Floorstanding speaker.

  1. More versatility. They can house multiple speaker drivers – which means that they can output audio in a number of different frequencies. This makes the a favorite for movie viewers where dialogue will go up and down in pitch and volume. They are also great for playing songs with heavy vocals.
  2. Free standing. They do not need to be supported by a stand or table. This usually translates to additional flexibility in placing them around your room.
  3. Depth of sound. Of all the speaker options they tend to create the best sound depth, particularly when paired with other floorstanding speakers.

Technical features and Why they matter

When picking out your Floorstanding speakers you will notice that a number of technical specifications listed. Here is what matters to you and why:

  • Frequency response – measured in Hertz. Indicates the range of tones it can produce. The first number tells you how deep the bass on the speaker goes. The second number tells you the highest the speaker’s frequency can get. The wider the frequency response, the fuller the sound.
  • Sensitivity – tells you how effective the speaker is at converting power into volume. The higher the rating, the louder your speakers will play with a given amount of power. Usually measured by driving a speaker with one watt of power and measuring the loudness one meter away in decibels (dB). The way to use this when building a system is to look for speakers with sensitivity ratings about 90 dB, particularly when using a low powered amp. A few dB in sensitivity can make a huge difference in what you hear. A speaker with a sensitivity rating 3dB higher than another speakers requires half as much power to give you the same sound.
  • Power Handling – tells you how strong your amp should be. The lower number tells you the minimum wattage needed and the higher number tells you he maximum wattage the speaker can handle for an extended time.
  • Impedance – tells you the amount of electricals resistance that it presents to an amplifier. A speakers actual impedance constantly fluctuates while playing music and movies. Match your speakers specs to make sure they are compatible with the amplifier you are also buying. Low impedance speakers can cause problems with amplifiers that are not designed to deliver high amounts of continuous current
  • Speaker material – speakers can be made of all sorts of material. What is important to keep in mind is that premium materials generally give you better sound than their lower-cost alternatives.
  • Passive, active or powered: Passive speakers make up most of what is out there. The power to make them work comes from your amplifier with the speaker directing the signal to their separate drivers. In powered signal is amplified inside the speaker itself. Active speakers have each driver in a speaker being fed by its own amplifier. What this means for you- you get the best sound using separate components and passive speakers. However, if you are space constrained or don’t want to deal with multiple boxes there are some excellent powered & active speakers that deliver excellent sound.
